Rachel Hutchinson's earlier textile practice was centred on the transformative potential of cloth as a carrier of memory, identity and experience. Combining vintage fabrics, found papers, paint and detailed hand embroidery, she reinterpreted traditional textile techniques through a contemporary visual language. Her work was exhibited in galleries across Belfast, London and throughout the UK, alongside a portfolio of public and private commissions for healthcare, community and commercial settings. Notable projects included Continuum for the Ulster Hospital Maternity Unit, a commissioned installation for Windsor Women's Centre and a temporary furniture installation for Queen's Film Theatre in Belfast. Through layered surfaces, intricate stitchwork and the reuse of historical materials, her artworks invited reflection on heritage, family histories and the continuity of human experience across generations.
